Cystitis – the most common, mostly bacterial, inflammation of the urinary tract, affects the bladder mucosa. The most common pathogen is the colon (Escherichia coli) and other intestinal bacteria, especially of the genera Staphylococcus and Enterococcus. Inflammation often affects sexually active women between 20 and 50 years old, which is why the other name for this condition is “cystitis honeymoon.”

EPIDEMIOLOGY
Cystitis is more common in women, especially between 15 and 34 years of age and after menopause. In men, it happens more often after the age of 50 and is an indication to visit a doctor, as it can lead to serious complications. This is a common disease; 20-50% of women have had cystitis at least once in their lifetime.

RISK FACTORS
Cystitis is more common in women with diabetes, with previous or current upper urinary tract infection, during pregnancy and after menopause. Women taking oral contraceptives are also more at risk. Untreated, chronic cystitis can lead to serious complications. One of them is an infection coming from the bladder through the ureters to the kidneys, causing pyelonephritis.

PREVENTION
Drinking plenty of fluids, taking care of personal hygiene, urinary incontinence.

SYMPTOMS
• pollakiuria
• haematuria
• urine with an unpleasant odor
• pressure on the bladder
• feeling of pain and burning at the end of voiding (duty)

DIAGNOSTICS
• general urine test
• urine culture

TREATMENT
• Pharmacotherapy: antibiotics, chemotherapeutics, painkillers and antispasmodics.
• Drink as much fluid as possible. Frequent urination by flushing out pathogens from the urinary tract.
• Special herbal tea blends for use in kidney and bladder disease can support treatment.
Benefit may be taking vitamin C at a dose of 100 milligrams a day, also for the prophylactic prevention of urinary tract infections in pregnant women and drinking urine acidifying fluids (in order to obtain an unfavorable environment for bacterial growth), e.g. compote or cranberry juice. Because of the potential for interaction, patients taking vitamin K antagonist medications (e.g. warfarin) should not use cranberry supplements without first consulting their physician. Alternative treatment and prevention methods are used because of the often chronic nature of cystitis and the possibility of developing antibiotic resistance. In addition to the above-mentioned products with cranberry and vitamin C, natural methods also include the use of probiotics, preparations with d-mannose, bearberry and berberine.
